The Porchistas started as a bunch of friends writing and singing songs late into summer nights, on their rickety porch on Forest Street in Montclair, New Jersey. That evolved to DIY house concerts and block parties that continue today. The Porchistas have developed friendships with musicians throughout New Jersey that shape the identity of who they are as a band. They see music and art as community building endeavors.
The Porchistas music is sharply defined by the songwriting chemistry between Adam Falzer & Alan Smith.
Songwriter, guitarist and producer Adam "Devil Hands" Falzer studied Music Synthesis at Berklee School of Music & plays memorable, melodic leads and solid rhythms. Though theory based, his matter of fact, rock and roll approach to music-making is the backbone of the Porchistas steady flow of records.
Alan "Sucia" Smith, songwriter & guitarist, learned to play music from his neighbor and former Porchista Jeff Ecklund, and was drawn to songwriting through his wide range of life experiences. When he's not pushing local music, he might be found building houses out of poo and bamboo in a remote tropical farm town.
Gerry Griffin has been playing the bass since he was 15 years old. He's played in several bands over the years including the ALIEN SLAVES, Baked Fresh Daily and Mojo Edge. Gerry records and produces music at his studio, the Temple of Tuneage & now co-produces Porchistas records with Falzer.
Drummer Jonathan Riordan has been making a name for himself with NJ musicians for the past 15 years. He's racked up a lot of experience playing with bands spanning many genres. He is now happy to finally find himself while sitting behind the kit backing up his favorite people/musicians: The Porchistas.
The Aquarian Weekly - The Porchistas - Live ReviewJune 12, 2013
Jersey Rock - Maria Mar
"... one of the most unexpected, pleasing albums I’ve heard in quite a while... 'Make A Wish' captivated me upon first listen, but it didn’t prepare me for the rich and varied experience of their entire record... The assortment of music on this record is fantastic. The faultless production values help the songs flow together and enhance the overall listening experience ... here is a group that shows proof you can take something that exists and make it sound completely fresh. Catch one of their live sets sooner rather than later."
Jersey Beat - The Porchistas - Live ReviewApril 27, 2013
"... The Porchistas Live captures the group's abundant charm, elegant harmony vocals, the wit of lead singer Alan Smith's lyrics, and the individual members' accomplished musicianship... "
The Star Ledger - The Baby Album - ReviewJuly 13, 2012
"...a band both confrontational and warmhearted one with a real conscience and historical memory... "
