Detroit rock band The Seatbelts started in Dearborn, Michigan in 1976.≤ ≥ Originated by Greg Upshur and Sean Curran in parking lot at the University of Michigan in Dearborn. After sitting in a piano class together they went to Seans' car, a Ford Maverick. They smoked a joint and came up with the name, The Seatbelts. The original line up included Tony Bojanic on drums, Tommy Kilowatt and lee Turner on guitar, Skid Marx on bass, and Greg Upshur on lead vocals. The first song, " I wanna marry Patti Smith”, is still played at shows today. The Seatbelts played primarily in the Punk bars of Detroit.Out of state gigs included Maxs’ Kansas City in NYC. and London, Ontario. Ron Asheton from The Stooges produced one of the Seatbelts first recordings.

Made In U.S.A., the groups first 45 vinyl was released in 1982. "Girl off the Street” and” International”, were the two sides.It received a 77 on Dick Clarks’ American Bandstand. In 1982 the group disbanded for nearly 30 years. Lead singer, Greg Upshur went on to sing The National Anthem at different sporting events which included a performance at an NFL game to 70 thousand in 1998 at the now defunct Silver Dome in Pontiac, Michigan.

In 2010 they reformed to do just one reunion show at Smalls≤ ≥ in Hamtramck, Michigan. Seven years later they are still at it. In 2013 they debuted their first Album, JOY RIDE.≤ Skid Marx (bass), Rick Mills (guitar,), Tony Bojanic (drums), Greg Upshur (lead vocals) and Chris Flanagan(guitar)

In 2016 the Seatbelts had a viral YouTube hit in Finland covering PKNs'Aina mun Pitaa ≤ ≥ the Finnish bands' entry song into Eurovision. The Seatbelts’ English version of the song≤≥ (I always have to) won numerous cover song contests in Europe≤ ≥ Flanagan and Mills had left the band before this recocording and were replaced by Derek Murtaugh and John Whalen. Murtaugh was then replaced by current guitarist Dan Hiveley. In October 2016, Halloween Night, Grammy Voting member Robert Slap caught the Seatbelts act in downtown Detroit . He then wrote a review calling them, “ band of brothers”.≤ ≥

In 2017 The Seatbelts have been nominated for threeDetroit Music Awards.

Their latest release on Spotify is a cover of Neil Youngs' ' , After The Gold Rush≤ ≥

Current members include three original members; Tony Bojanic( drums), Skid Marx(bass), Greg Upshur(lead vocals), accompanied by new guitarists Dan Hiveley(guitar) and John Whalen(guitar).
