Biography
Proyecto Piña Duluc:
Is a Jazz quartet from the Dominican Republic formed by
Rigo Cabrera on bass, Arturo Saleta on drums,
Hipólito Jean on piano and Jonatan Piña Duluc
on saxophone and composition.
The ensemble was formed in 2009 as a way to
develop new and original material to play in the
context of the "Lunes de Jazz", a weekly jazz event held in
the city of Santiago every monday for the last 13 years.
The group specializes in Piña Duluc`s own material and
finding ways to blend traditional styles of jazz like Bebop,
Cool, Hard-bop and Avant-Garde with Dominican folk and popular
dance styles like Merengue, Gagá, Priprí and other country and
urban contemporary styles of local music. Our music explores the
vision that all sounds that form part of the African Diaspora`s
legacy share traits that can be used to create a seamless fusion
of styles that feel totally natural and spontaneous. Our way of playing
and melding vocabularies also derives from the premise that Jazz
as a language can be used as a technique to enhance and give new
direction and intentions to any musical style. Our creative
intention is to make something new out of the old and to
reach the universal by understanding our heritage and our own
culture first.
Proyecto Piña Duluc has played in Various important venues in the
Dominican Republic like, Fiesta Sunset Jazz many times
since 2010, Dominican Republic Jazz Festival in 2010,
Lunes de Jazz in Santiago Rooftop, Colonial Sounds, The Galleries among others.
The group plans to release their first album in late fall of 2014. It was recorded live on
two concert nights at The Galleries, Santo Domingo as one of the events promoted
by Jazz en Dominicana, the leading name in Dominican Jazz.
