John Sullivan is an artist from Jackson, Mississippi. He lost his mom when he was only 10-years old. Soon thereafter, he taught himself to play guitar in hopes of finding a form of therapy that would help vent the anger and confusion something that traumatic brings to a child’s life.
John’s colorful upbringing would provide him with exposure to almost every style of music imaginable. He inherited a passion for classic country passed down from his grandfather. He learned to love Hank Williams Sr., Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, George Jones, Conway Twitty and Merle Haggard at an early age. In the years following his mother’s passing, John would often sit and listen as his uncle picked CCR and Elvis tunes on his acoustic guitar. It was there that John first became fascinated with what would become his instrument of choice. It wouldn’t take long before a love for old school Rock and Roll was born, especially that which incorporated blues guitar styling, such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Bros., Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Blackfoot, Led Zeppelin, Neil Young and Stevie Ray Vaughn. During his teen years, John discovered bands like Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, Smashing Pumpkins and Staind who pushed the envelope for modern guitar driven Rock. He also developed a deep love and respect for the great bluesmen from his home state like B.B. King, Robert Johnson, Charlie Parker and Son House.
Growing up, John locked himself in his room for hours on end seeking a way to make his own unique imprint on the music world. He learned to burn like Hendrix, scream like Kurt and tell a story like Cash. Through intense study of his heroes’ styles, an otherworldly imagination and a prodigal affinity for his instrument, John created a guitar and vocal sound that is one of a kind. At 27-years old, he is on a mission to prove that heartfelt songwriting and playing still exists outside of the corporate music scene found on radio these days. He writes, performs and produces his own music – so rest assured that what you hear with his name on it isn’t someone else’s vision. It’s his.
John loves all music, but what he is attracted to more than style or genre is great songwriting. A few years ago he began collaborating with songwriter Robert Trent, and since then they’ve been assembling a quality rarely seen in mainstream music anymore.
