Jam Thicket is, as the name suggests, a dense forest of funky grooves and intricate latin-inspired rhythms with roots in surf-rock and improvisational jams. The history of the band is as diverse as the Jam Thicket sound. Rising from the ashes of Charlottesville's premier psycho-surf band, Surfzilla, funky lead/rhythm guitarist/trumpet player, Dave Hersman, and driving bassist/didgeridoo magician, Dan Haig, recruited versitile drummer, Warren Jobe, from the brightly burning embers of the junkyard folk rock group, American Dumpster, to form the band in the fall of 2010. Experimental keyboardist, Victor Benshoff, soon joined the group taking the sound into new explosive directions with Leslie-fueled pulsating mayhem for a sound that has been dubbed Surfunkadelic by fans.
Jam Thicket's influences come from a varied background in funk and rock, calling on the sound of groups like The Funky Meters, Frank Zappa, The Allman Brothers, and classic surf bands like The Pyramids and Dick Dale and the Del-Tones. With a solid lineup of original material ranging from infectious funk and up-tempo surf to extended improv rock, Jam Thicket is currently working in the studio to release their first album in 2014.
