Biography

Evan Whitfield was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and has lived in both Canada and the United States. He began serious studies in classical piano at the age of 7, and in 2001 completed his Masters in Contemporary Improvisation from The New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. During this time Evan studied with some of the finest jazz piano and music educators on the east coast, including Charlie Banacos, Ran Blake, Paul Bley, Fred Hersch and Peter Cassino. After graduating he was involved in many independent and creative projects as a sideman, musician, teacher, and composer, and in 2003 landed his first professional gig as a keyboardist touring the United States with the Kelly Miller Circus. During the last six years he has worked as a show band keyboardist and jazz pianist for Carnival, Holland America, Princess and Cunard cruise lines, and in Christmas of 2007 was the leader of the Queen’s Room ballroom dance orchestra on Cunard’s grand ocean liner, the Queen Mary 2. He has music-directed for several university musical theatre productions around Boston, taught private school music education in New Hampshire, and coached piano performance at French Woods, a leading summer youth camp in the Catskills, New York. As a jazz pianist, he has led his own trio at clubs such as the Knitting Factory, NY, NY, and at selected jazz lounges around Boston. As a transcriber and arranger, he works for numerous entertainers and performing artists in the New England area, and for many singers in the cruise ship world. He has recently been promoted to the role of bandleader for the Queen’s Room Ballroom Dance Orchestra, under contract with Cunard Cruise Lines, a division of Carnival UK. When not busy performing on the high seas, he lives at home with his family in Gloucester, Massachusetts.
