The History of Desert Winds Music
The current location of Desert Winds is a freestanding building on Broadway Road in Tempe, Arizona. We have been at this location since February of 1993. This store has a sales floor, warehouse space, and a repair shop on the premises capable of handling most aspects of woodwind and brass repair.
Desert Winds was incorporated in 1976 by owner and president Gerald Evoniuk. After talking with freelance musicians, Phoenix Symphony members, and Arizona State University professors, Gerry saw that there was a need for a repair shop that did quality work in a reasonable time frame. In addition to meeting this need he decided to offer quality instruments and accessories at competitive prices.
The first store was located on West University Drive in Tempe. In 1978, the size of the store doubled. To meet the increased need for repair, sales floor, and inventory space, the store moved to South Ash Avenue, less than 4 blocks from Arizona State University's School of Music. In 1992, the opportunity to buy the building on Broadway arose, and Desert Winds moved again. The current location is farther from ASU, but is more convenient to the parents of our elementary and middle school customers.
Local teachers responded to our rental plan for elementary and middle school students, which entailed a school year lease rather than a month to month plan. In 1987, Desert Winds loaned studio space to a nonprofit arts teaching organization called Comprehensive Music Studios. This studio was renamed Arizona Community School for the Arts (ACSA) in 1991 and is now owned and operated independently as a for profit company. The original philosophy of ACSA was that instructors would have at least a bachelor's degree specifically in the instrument they were teaching. ACSA is no longer affiliated with Desert Winds.
