She has been called “The little girl with a big voice.” And while this is true, she is so much more. Mesmerizing, motivated and possessed of an undeniable star power, Cáthia is a young woman positively at the forefront of her artistry and her destiny. Thanks to her prominence on season four of the hit television series The Voice, Cáthia is already well known to millions of viewers. Now, with her debut CD that was just released February 20th, 2014, co-written and produced by Dante Lattanzi, she is building on this momentum as she confirms the praise earned from her industry coaches, Shakira and Usher. After only 2 days of her album titled "Unbreakable, being released, she soared up on the iTunes Latin album charts at #16 as well as being on the front page of itunes "New & Noteworthy" section and top albums under $8.
“I learned about what kind of artist I want to be in the industry,” she says of her experiences on the 2013 show. Pop, with Latin and soul influence, are key components in her musical alchemy. Singing in English, Spanish, and the combination she terms as “Spanglish” extends her appeal to a wide, multi- dimensional audience. “I didn’t know that singing in Spanish would have so much impact,” she says. “There aren’t many emerging artists entering the American music industry doing this.”
She is also a formidable songwriter who has written all the songs for her upcoming album. “I like to keep things simple and not overcomplicated, but with inspirational and empowering messages,” she says. The lead single “Without You,” (available on iTunes and on YouTube) produced by her musical partner and producer: Gaetano Lattanzi projects the vibrant personality and a soaring multi-octave range that defines Cáthia’s artistry. The track features an irresistible modern pop sensibility, subtle touches of Caribbean rhythms and Spanish guitar, with Cáthia’s signature vocals front and center.
Despite her prodigious talents, in many ways Cáthia is still the local girl from the Bronx – connecting through social media, shopping with a “boho chic” fashion sensibility, hanging out with friends, and doting on a pair of cats. Born in the borough, Cáthia’s cultural roots extend to her family’s ancestral home in El Salvador, where her parents traveled from in order to provide their children with a better life.
Cáthia – who describes her younger self as “an attention-seeking little kid” – loved the spotlight: Singing, performing, and doing impressions of singers like Selena Quintanilla and Christina Aguilera. She found outlets for her talents at the illustrious “Fame” school, the Fiorello LaGuardia Performing Arts HS in Manhattan where she was trained in classical voice. Singing in legendary venues like Carnegie Hall and the Apollo Theater – where she placed first in three rounds of the famous amateur night competition – confirmed her stage command and audience appeal.
She has chosen to debut as an independent artist, raising funds through crowd sourcing. She loves the studio, and is involved in all aspects of recording. Attending music business courses at Baruch College has helped her to understand the mechanisms at work in the music marketplace. “I want to make sure I know what’s going one – especially when I am doing this
independently,” Cáthia confirms.
Her industry coaches on The Voice proclaimed that Cáthia was “...meant to be global.” She can also count among her fans fellow Bronx home girl Sonia Sotomayor, the Associate Justice of the Supreme Court who
heard Cáthia performing at an event at New York’s Fordham College. “She told me I was an example to the kids in the Bronx and in my community. That I inspire people and to keep doing what I’m doing.”
While her aspirations are ambitious, it is Cáthia’s pure connection of sound to soul that defines her as an artist. “If my music inspires others to go out and accomplish their dreams, there is nothing better to ask for: To have others see that if you really set your mind to something and work hard at it, it can happen.”
