Bobby "Sweet Papa" Jones was born during the Great Depression and became a bricklayer as a teenager. Since he had an innate artistic bent he quickly became the corner man on brick laying jobs, the most critical job in constructing level brick structures.Working with black laborers he was introduced to the Country Blues listening to them sing on the job. His artistic side got him singing along and eventually writing songs to sing. As a young man that sang and played harmonica with both Country and Blues bands, he was known as Bobby "Bones" Jones because of his thin, wiry frame. People said he looked like a thin James Dean. After a two year stint in the Army, he returned to Georgia with a drinking problem, the scourge of many old time Country artists. He also did time in prison after an unfortunate altercation and being tried in front of what used to be known in the deep South as a "hanging judge". While incarcerated he wrote a number of songs in both Blues and Country genres.Unfortunately, he was never sober enough to record most of them. After a long stay at a Veterans home, a severe stroke was the end of his colorful life. He was married to the sister of Billy Joe Royal, an early Rock icon in the South.
