Biography

Derick Smith is a rising entrepreneur from Como, North Carolina who believes that the music industry is in dire need of a positive message to reach the next generation. With such childhood inspirations as Big Daddy Kane, A Tribe Called Quest and Common [Sense], Smith, 38, understands the transition that has occurred in hip-hop from being political to materialistic. Discontented with the message (or lack thereof), he is determined set a new standard in the “music message.”

The second oldest of 14 children (nine boys and five girls), Smith is no stranger to the struggle often voiced in today’s music. To deter this mentality, Smith works to encourage his siblings to do what is right and excel in academics. He serves as an example to them, his 13-year-old daughter, Dacia and 6 -year-old son Taron La'King Smith. Smith served over 13 years U.S. Army and completed a Bachelors of Science Degree from Elizabeth City State University with a major in Marketing and Management. He completed the degree in three and a half years. Non-stop schooling during the summer times his schooling kept him on the direction of finishing college early to pursue the Entertainment industry he came to love.

He recalls, “it all started out as a means to occupy time while serving with the United States Army in Iraq (2005), Smith began documenting his thoughts and emotions on paper in the form of rap lyrics. He called his first CD “Shortz First Time Out,” which debuted on the streets in April 2007. That was a very discouraging and disturbing period because the criticism he received about his unique style of rapping. Instead of folding, he went back in the studio and created 21 tracks to be featured on his next CD, “The Pursuit,” which was released in late February 2008. “I’ve been listening to rap, soul, gospel, hip-hop, rock-n-roll, classical and all genre’s of music all my life… I needed to make my contribution to teach, I’ve got something for the people who go out and make their own stimulus.”

Smith is responsible for the birth of his own label, Aicid Records & Entertainment: Real Music For Real People and will be proactive in the distribution of upcoming CD and projects of his label in the streets of Virginia, North Carolina, parts of Georgia and New York. Sample tracks can be heard on his website, www.aicidrecords.com and can be contacted at:
