Hansen's Music House has been in business for 60 years. The store was founded in 1948 by Eldon R. Hansen. His son, Robert (Bob) purchased the business from his father in 1959 and continues its operation today.
The history of the original wood frame building at 116 S. Lafayette Street spans a period of more than 100 years. Its origins date back to 1870 when it was built as a flour & feed store. The building started out as a two story structure, but the second story was removed after a fire. The building has been home to a variety of retail & service venues including; flour & feed store, a bakery, tailor shop, shoe repair shop, cigar shop, tire repair shop, plumbing business and a coffee shop. Eldon Hansen along with his father Frank Hansen operated a lunch room & restaurant in the building from 1940-1947 (Hansen's Restaurant "Good Food But No Beer"). The phone number to call was "79". The restaurant was especially well known for its tasty hot beef sandwiches made every day by Eldon's wife Pearl (The secret recipe has never been revealed outside the family). Bob's wife Ruth now is its guardian.
When Hansen's Music House opened for business in 1948 there were three other existing music stores in downtown Greenville. Eldon Hansen quickly learned the need to offer a diversity of products including sheet music & instruments. It was common during that time to offer items not necessarily associated with the music industry. Over the course of Hansen's Music House history the store has adjusted its stock to meet the needs of the community. Some of the many items that were sold along with music products include; hearing aids, refrigerators, television sets, radios, stereos, police scanners, 45rpm and LP records, 8 track tapes, cassettes and CD's.
Currently, Hansen's Music House, Inc. is a full line retail music store specializing in school band instrument sales & service. Bob visits 15 area schools on a weekly basis, providing supplies and repairs to the band departments. The store stocks a large selection of acoustic and electric guitars, banjos, mandolins, amplifiers, electronic keyboards, drum sets and sheet music. Hansen's can order special items not kept in stock as customers need with short delivery times. Hansen's offers lessons for most instruments as well as a complete band instrument repair facility with certified repair technician.
Owner, Bob Hansen, describes Hansen's Music House as a "small town store with big city selection and pricing". The staff at Hansen's Music has built a reputation for providing quality service, superior products, competitive pricing and unrivaled customer service.
Hansen's Music is proud of its history in Greenville and continues to stay on top of the ever changing music retail industry. Hansen's Music has introduced generations to the joy of making music and will continue to do so in the future.
