Biography

Eugene Smiley
Biography

I was born in New Orleans, and raised up in Brookhaven, MS. I started playing music at a very young age. I started play the piano in grade school and went on to perform in talent shows, plays, churches and other special events.

After graduating from high school, I moved to Kansas City, MO. Kansas City had a great music scene and background in Jazz, Blues, and R&B. I soon became a part of that scene. I establish myself very quickly. These were the days of the singing groups that made there mark in history as the top of the line R&B music. Bands were secondary and not as popular. The bands played the music for the vocal groups and the vocal groups got all the notoriety.

It was in 1967, that I made my first professional connection in Chicago with Brunswick Records. I was lead vocalist for a vocal group “The Visitor”. We had success with some of our recordings on 45’s. After my contract expired, I decided to become a single artist. I went on the road with several artists and became a decent guitarist and vocalist artist. I love it, I was hooked on it and I’m still performing playing while singing.

I’ve written a lot of music for a lot of people in the past and I’ve created a style in Blues that is my own. I’ve learned, that it’s not so much what you do but how you do it. That is something I learned from an old blues artist, “Mr. Albert King”, who was one of my favorite people that I work with.

Today, I’m enjoying the pleasures of being who I am, my accomplishments, my family and the opportunity to continue to perform. I’ve been blessed. Music will always be a part of my life.
